Facebook Is Testing a 'Satire' Label for Stories from 'The Onion'

With headlines like "Police Officer Doesn't See a Difference Between Black, Light-Skinned Black Suspects" and "Neither Pickup Basketball Team Has Scored In Over 2 Hours," it can be confusing for some (OK, your Aunt Debby) to interpret the satirical headlines from The Onion.

ArsTechnica has spotted that Facebook has begun labeling stories from the parody news source with a "satire" tag, just in case if that wasn't clear enough. The tag only appears after you click out to an Onion piece from your News Feed and then return to Facebook. That's when Facebook pulls up three more related articles and the word "satire" pops up in brackets.

A Facebook spokesperson confirmed the test to ArsTechnica:

"We are running a small test which shows the text '[Satire]' in front of links to satirical articles in the related articles unit in News Feed. This is because we received feedback that people wanted a clearer way to distinguish satirical articles from others in these units."

The test, which has been happening for about a month, is also being applied to other parody news sites. They didn't provide them with a list, but do let us know if you see a one appear for Fox News articles. [ArsTechnica]
