Apple's iPhone Charger Robs the iPhone 6 of its Best Hidden Feature

Apple's iPhone Charger Robs the iPhone 6 of its Best Hidden Feature

The iPhone 6 and 6 Plus have one notable, unadvertised feature: iPad-style, 2.1A, 12W charging. That means they can theoretically charge faster than any previous iPhone, but Apple stingily only bundled their standard 1A, 5W power brick in the box.

That's not a huge deal if you're charging your phone overnight, but if you're scrambling to get a few more percentage points on your battery at the airport before getting on your flight, you'll really benefit from a faster charger. If you have a standard iPad power brick, that will work just fine, but here are some better, cheaper options for any situation you might encounter.

The Semi-Permanent Option: Anker 40W PowerIQ 5-Port Charger - $26

This desktop charger is one of the most popular items we've ever featured on Kinja Deals, and with good reason. Instead of having separately labeled "iPhone," "Android," or "iPad," ports like many chargers, each USB port can detect the connected device, and route the proper amount of power to it automatically. This model has 8 amps and 40W shared between the five ports, so you could charge three iPhone 6s at full speed, with a little bit of head room to trickle charge another device as well.

Better For Travel: Anker 2-Port, 20W PowerIQ Dual Wall Charger - $13

This little wall wart isn't much bigger than Apple's standard iPad charger, but it includes two ports, and 20W of power. That's enough to charge two new iPhones at nearly full speed, or one new iPhone and a smaller-draw device at full speed simultaneously.

For the Car: Voltmate Dual-Port Car Charger - $9

This charger comes in a variety of colors, and includes two ports with 4.8 amps of combine output, more than enough to charge a couple of new iPhones simultaneously.

On the Go: RAVPower 3rd Gen Deluxe 15,000mAh External Charger - $37

Unfortunately, there seem to be vanishingly few external chargers that can output 2.1 amps on two ports simultaneously. This RAVPower will do it, and it has great reviews, but just know that it's gigantic. If you want something a little more portable, the Anker Astro E3 holds 10,000mAh, and can charge one iPhone at full speed, and another at the "old" speed simultaneously.
