Networking can be daunting, especially for us introverts. Asian Efficiency recommends engaging with key people online beforehand if you're nervous about an upcoming event where you will be meeting them in person.
Most of us are nervous about two key things: making a bad impression and not knowing what to say. This tactic helps avoid both. You'll have time to research the person's body of work and pay them a nice compliment online, which feels less taxing and gives you an introduction before you even get to the conference.
Tahn Pham explains the route he usually takes when engaging someone online:
- Email the person with a sincere compliment about their body of work. Bonus: end your email with "No reply needed". It takes pressure of them to respond and nobody does this so you'll immediately standout.
- Try to engage in a conversation on Twitter.
- Leave insightful comments behind on their blog posts, Facebook threads and Instagram photos.
If you want to play it safe, err on the side of being useful and resourceful to them. Jokes and funny comments can help you standout, but you have to know their sense of humor and if you don't it can backfire.
Find your flow of online engagement and use social media to reduce the stress that comes with meeting someone new. Read more below.
