Tim Cook: Apple's New Campus Will Be the Greenest Building Ever

We already know Apple's new "Spaceship" campus looks cool. And if Tim Cook's claims are true, it's going to be cool and the most incredibly eco-friendly building on the planet.

Cook talked a big old talk at Climate Week NYC:

"We're building a new headquarters that will, I think, be the greenest building on the planet. It'll be a center for innovation, and it's something clearly our employees want and we want."

Cook made the statement after discussing how Apple will work to lower its overall carbon footprint, not just at its facilities but all along the supply chain. He highlighted the company's decision to include an environmental checklist in its product announcements as well.

He didn't, however, provide any information about how Campus 2 will be the paragon of greenness. If Campus 2 is actually the greenest building on the planet, that's fantastic. If Apple is cleaning and continues to clean up its supply chain, that's also wonderful. But talk is cheap.

This is exciting, but it's more exciting when Apple does something concretely pro-environment, like banning two hazardous chemicals from iPhone production (of course they shouldn't have been in there in the first place, and Apple only banned them after a worker in its supply chain died).

If Cook is serious about making the new headquarters and the supply chain green, Apple will have to be a lot more proactive than it has been in the past. But it's good to see that Apple is making an effort from the get-go. And for all of our sakes, we hope Tim Cook is right.
