Verizon Gives More Detail on A La Carte TV to Your Mobile Device

Verizon has been eyeing different TV distribution models for a while, and today at the Goldman Sachs Communacopia conference the company's CEO gave some big hints about a future of pay-for-the-channels-you-want TV delivered to your mobile device. Sounds promising, if Big Red can deliver.

As reported by Deadline , Verizon CEO Lowell McAdam says that by mid-2015, mobile users will have access to bundles that offer content from the major broadcasters as well as a customer-curated list of other channels. It sounds like a cord-cutter's dream: "No one wants to have 300 channels on your wireless," McAdam said. Everyone understands it will go to a la carte. The question is what does that transition look like."

Assumedly, that would mean mobile users could get ABC, NBC, CBS, and FOX delivered to their phones or tablets along with a custom list that could include such specialty channels like DreamWorks Animation's AwesomenessTV. Such a plan would require cooperation from the big TV providers, most of which have been reluctant to abandon the old system of cable companies offering channels only in super-bulk quantities.

Verizon's working on it: "There's no doubt in my mind we can make it a win-win," McAdams said at the conference. "Over the last six months to a year that dialogue has changed dramatically."

That's no guarantee, but if Big Red can bring us what's promised, you might finally be able to throw less of your money at the cable company without missing your favorite TV shows—on your phone, at least. Fingers crossed. [Deadline via The Verge]
