Sleater-Kinney: Bury Our Friends

Holy shit new Sleater-Kinney music for the first time in a decade. Today, Sleater-Kinney released "Bury Our Friends" and announced a new record, No Cities to Love, to be released in January. Oh and a tour. I'm so excited that I'm actually considering going to see their show at Terminal 5, New York's most loathsome club, just to get my ears exploded again.

It's not totally surprising that Sleater-Kinney took a break after releasing The Woods back in 2005. Since the early 90s the Corin Tucker and Carrie Brownstein had banged out record after record of super-intelligent, uncompromising rock n' roll that's thoughtful, moody, and totally brilliant. On The Woods, Sleater-Kinney carve out an impressively realized record from a fog of growling guitars and forcefully melodies. It's damn near flawless.

The first track from No Cities to Love is spectacular. Though it's got the angular guitars and marching drums, you definitely hear the influence of time. There are elements of the dancey indie that's taken hold in the decade since SK dropped a track. That the song is so convincingly, well, Sleater-Kinney, is a testament to the band's ability to reinvent itself time and again. [Spotify, iTunes, Google Play, Amazon]
