Ever wondered where people are more likely to get hitched, or perhaps live out their life solo? These maps, created by Nathan Yau, show how relationship status varies across the entire country.
Taking data from the American Community Survey, which goes down to the county level, Yau created maps which show the proportion of married, never married, divorced, separated, and widowed people across the U.S.. He explains what he found:
About half of the population aged 15 years or older are married. That large portion surprised me. I mean, I'm married, most of my friends are married, and I guess a large portion of my cousins are married, but still. I guess when you really think about it, half of the marriageable population isn't that high... That said, some areas have higher percentages of married people compared to the rest of the country. In particular, the Midwest, Utah, and parts of Idaho and Montana are high up there.
The analysis of divorced vs. separated is particularly interesting, suggesting that divorce is more common in the north west and merely living apart more likely in the south east. Some quirk of culture, perhaps? Anyway, you can go see the full picture yourself over on Flowing Data. [Flowing Data]
