The Most Heartwrenching Photo of the Orion Launch

Since Orion launched on Friday, we've seen dozens of fabulous photos of NASA's EFT-1 mission, mostly of the majestic Delta IV Heavy launch at Kennedy Space Center. But this one is truly outstanding.

Tim Dodd captured one of the very first moments of the liftoff through the haunting remains of Launch Complex 34, where Gus Grissom, Ed White, and Roger Chaffee died on January 27, 1967, in a tragic fire. The concrete gate of the abandoned launch site, which was host to the crew of the planned low Earth orbital test of the Apollo-1 mission, perfectly frames Orion's takeoff in the early morning launch. It's an emotional image, to say the least. [Image credit: Tim Dodd/everydayastronaut]
