Apple has reportedly acquired FoundationDB, a company known for making database software capable of quickly handling large numbers of transactions.
The report comes from TechCrunch which says that the acquisition is likely aimed at improving the infrastructure behind Apple's various digital storefronts:
It seems likely that this was an acquisition designed to bolster Apple's server-side technologies for the App Store, iTunes Connect or iTunes in the Cloud. With millions of apps now in the store and billions being served to users, there is undoubtedly room for improvement in those systems.
As of now, the acquisition hasn't been confirmed by either company, but TechCrunch notes that FoundationDB is no longer offering downloads of its software, with the following message displayed on its community website:
Thank you for your support of FoundationDB over the last five years. We're grateful to have shared our vision of building the best database software and we strongly value your participation in this community. We have made the decision to evolve our company mission and, as of today, we will no longer offer downloads. If you have any technical questions, please email info@foundationdb.com
Of course, nothing is official until we hear something from Apple. However, with the increasing size of Apple's app and media distribution platforms, it would make sense that the company is looking for ways to improve its server-side infrastructure.
